Tomlinson, Elizabeth

No baptismal record has been found for Elizabeth. She seemed to be a well loved mistress of Edward, the Fifth Lord Dudley. She suposedly had between 11 and 14 children by him, all of which would have been expected to "marry into the land-owning gentry class."(Lewis, Billie, Thomas Underwood.) Elizabeth was listed as "Mris Elyzabeth Tumlinsone" in her burial record. (C-1364)

One of her sisters or possibly an illegitimate daughter through her affair with Edward, the Fifth Lord Dudley, married a Bagley and had issue. According to an article in the Jan. 1996 issue of TAG by Charles M. Hansen, the Bagley's are her nephews, children of her unnamed sister and John Bagley. Edward Bagley, one of John Bagley's sons, is named as the administrator in the dispersal of Elizabeth Tomlinson's estate on Jun 19, 1635 in Canterbury, England. He is listed in that document by the term "nepoti ex matre" which according to Charles Hansen's source, "Index to Administrations in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury" was translated as nephew through the sister. (C-2324) In a straight translation of latin however, Edward would be listed as the grandson of Elizabeth Tomlinson.

There is a Chancery suit Dudley alias Tomlinson vs Dudley alias Tomlinson, Stafford, 1626-1639 under PRO reference C3/400/154 that needs located in the Court of Chancery or Court of Probate that should shed more light on this matter. 8 9
