OSTEGO COUNTY PIONEER PASSES BEYOND AT BAY CITY
Mrs. Rebecca Jane Sowers passed away December 29, 1920, at 9p.m. in Bay City at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Humeston. She had been failing in health since August 9, 1920, suffering a stroke of paralysis at that time. She was living in her own home in this city. She later recovered strength and was taken to Bay City to her daughter's home. At times she seemed to be gaining rapidly, when about two weeks ago a decided change for the worse was noticed and from that time she had steadily declined until she passed away Wednesday evening.
Rebecca Jane McCullough was born at Brookville, Pennsylvania, March 30, 1842. Died December 29, 1920. She was married to David R. Sowers at the age of 17 years. They came to Michigan, June 25th, 1882. The family came to Vanderbilt where they resided until the year 1892. They then moved to Gaylord, which place they have resided ever since. Mrs. Sowers was the mother of eleven children of which seven are living: Mrs. Chas. Humeston of Bay City, Michigan, F. B. Sowers of Bay City, Michigan, Mrs. A. C. Hargrave of Lake Gogebic, Michigan, Mrs Fred Baker of Muskegon, Michigan, Mrs. Otto Lount of Marenisco, Michigan, Mrs. Gus Elwood of Pontiac, Michigan, Mr. Mack D. Sowers of Gaylord, Michigan. Carrie, Mattie, Flora and Myrtle having preceded their mother a number of years ago. There are 30 grand children and 17 great grand children. She is also survived by 3 sisters and one brother, all of whom reside in Pennsylvania.
The deceased was a devout worker of the Baptist church of this village for 25 years. In her home and social life she was loved and respected by all, always ready and willing to go when called to nurse the sick. She was a devoted wife and mother, and as a friend, she was always one whose presence and friendship were most highly appreciated because of their sincerity.
The funeral services were held from the Baptist church, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. E. A. Ehrhart, pastor officiating. Burial in Bagley cemetery.
Mrs. Geo. Ellwood of Pontiac was the only member of the family not present at the funeral service.
