This is a very difficult family to follow. There is a John Brumbaugh in the area in 1870, a labourer, living with a group of other men. He appears to have had a brother George, married, living in the area. After that, no definite traces are found. His wife Mary Hayes is living with her mother and listed as divorded, in 1880, with two children Curtis and Flint. Neither of these show up in later census records. However, there is a death certificate for "Fred Hays" in 1909, listing him as married and signed by a Mrs. Mary Brumbaugh, also listing his parents as Mary Hays and John Brumbaugh. It seems likely then that this was his mother, but strange that she should use her maiden name in 1880 and later, her married name, while this Fred seems to use her maiden name. No other records for him under Fred Hayes or Brumbaugh were found. It also seems likely that Fred was either the Flint or Curtis listed in the 1880 census. No marriage records were found although it seems likely that since they had two children, they did at some point marry. The 1913 death record cited by many for a John Brumbaigh in Ohio is uncertain at best. Until further records are found, it seems safe to say that this line goes no further.
