The Rankin House is on a lot 60 X 100 feet that was part of the original Warrant 6939 granted to Jacob McFadden on March 6, 1812 by the State of Pennsylvania. He in turn sold it to Joseph Barnett in 1815, who sold it to John Mitchell that same year. John Mitchell sold it to William Frampton in 1834. William Frampton died in 1882 and his widow Mary Williams Frampton deeded it to her daughter Elizabeth Frampton McCullough and husband William McCullough in 1884. It then became the property of Joseph Craig Rankin by deed in 1889 from Eliza Jane McCullough and William McCullough.

Mechanicsville
(Frampton P. O.) In Clarion Township, three miles south from Strattonville, and about five miles south-east from Clarion. It was laid out by Wm. Frampton.

Was deacon of Zion Baptish Church in Clarion, Pa. After marriage, moved to Mechanicsville, Pa. where he cleared enough acres to farm and built a home. He started both peach and apple orchards. Many years later this home burned down. -- According to information from Clair Gross, son of Ada Guthrie and Alfred Gross, great great grandson of William Frampton.

Source: CLARION COUNTY AND IT'S BEGINNINGS, The Clarion County Historical Society (1975) ---"Mechanicsville, formerly called Frampton post office, is on the road from Clarion to New Bethlehem. It was one of the very early villages and is about one and a half miles from Brush Run settlement, the earliest settlement in what is now Clarion county. The post office was named Frampton, for William Frampton, an early settler there. His wife was Mary Williams, daughter of Amos Williams of Williamsburg. William Frampton wasn't only a farmer, but also a mechanic. He made all of his own tools and some for others. He had three apprentices who worker for $4.00 a month, and they had to provide their own candles. This activity resulted in the settlement finally being called Mechanicsville."
