Eighteenth Century Emigrants from the Northern Alsace to America" by Annette K. Burgart, pages 127-132. ... p. 127 "Philip Duffort arr. 1738 Robt & Alice. Came from Langansoultzbach, Germany, now called Woerth, Alsace, France." They made a six month journey down the Rhine River to Rotterdam where they found a captain and ship and sailed to Cowles England, a stop required by the British government. They then set sail for the Colonies.
From the History of the Zion Lutheran Church dated 1982:
The "Long Valley," as the Indians called it, or Dutch Valley (German Valley), as it came to be called, was settled by the white man around 1730. Johannes Wilhelm Welsh and Samuel Swackhammer arrived in the area and wrote to their friends in Holland to join them.
On that day of Sept 11, 1738 the sailing vessel "Robert and Alice" arrived in Philadelphia. Several months before, she had sailed from the port of Rotterdam, headed for New York, but strong winds had sent her off course with the result that her 320 passengers landed in Philadelphia. Among the passengers were 38 persons who would be the settlers of the Long Valley. They were of German heritage and were fleeing the Rhenish Palatinate because they were protestant, both Lutheran and Dutch Reform, and that was an unhealthy condition to be in at that time in history. The little band of settlers traveled from Philadelphia to the Long Valley under the guidance of Indian braves sent by the great Indian Chief Tammenud through the friendship of the already established settler Samuel Swackhammer.
Philip Tufford (Dufford) of Roxbury Twsp., Morris Co. 15 Feb. 1769. " to grandson, Jurrey Staffey Tufford, and my 2 sons, George and Adam, each 5 shillings. Wife, Catrena, rest of my estate, and, after her death, to go to my daughter, Mary Magdilen. Executors - my wife and Stuffey Derurger. 1769, Jan. 18. Inventory, L67.7.6
Philip Dufford signed the 1749 call to John Weygand, a Lutheran Minister.
From: Chambers, Theodore Frelinghuysen. The Early Germans of New Jersey; Their History, Churches, and Genealogies. Dover, NJ, USA: Dover Printing Company, 1895, Settlers of German Valley 153:
Jacob Dufford, to whom the lease was given, was the son of Philip Tofort or Dufford, who was the first of the name to come to the valley. He arrived at Philadelphia nth September, 1738, in the ship Robert and Olliver. He was probably of Huguenot origin, the name being Devoor or Dufoor. (See Genealogies p. 342). He died 1767, his son Jacob having probably died before him. His son Adam probably removed to Greenwich township, Warren Co., as his name is found on the " Old Straw Church" book. His son George has left no descendants in this vicinity. Philip, Jr., also disappeared very early.
